Cow Protection

The central fact of Hinduism, however, is cow protection. Cow protection, to me, is one of the most wonderful phenomena in human evolution. It takes the human being beyond his species. The cow, to me, means the entire sub-human world. Man through the cow is enjoined to realize his identity with all that lives. Why the cow was selected for apotheosis is obvious to me. The cow was, in India, the best companion. She was the giver of plenty. Not only did she give milk, but she also made agriculture possible. The cow is a poem on pity. One reads pity in the gentle animal. She is the mother of millions of Indian man-kind. Protection of the cow means protection of the whole dumb-creation of God. The ancient seer, whoever he was, began with the cow.

Three Puppies Adopted

Three female stray puppies were rescued from the premises of MA Math, Karunagappally. They were brought to Kollam in the PFA ambulance, and adoptions were made in nice haqppy homes for them.

Captive Elephants

PFA Kollam Chapter has teamed up with PFA Chennai Chapter to help captive elephants. Together, the two chapters have filed a writ petition in the High Court of Kerala against extreme cruelties towards captive elephants in the State. The Petition was requesting that the "Captive Elephant Management Rules - 2003" be implemented and enforced.

Under the auspices of the Kindness Club, a seminar was held in the FMN College, Kollam the day after it was inaugurated (September 26th, 2006). The topic of this was "Voice of the Voiceless".

Compassion in Action

PFA participated in a national level seminar on "Compassion in Action," held at the Sree Narayana College for Women in Kollam. The Kindness Club was inaugurated during this seminar, on the 25th of September, 2006.

Kindness Club

The Kindness Club was inaugurated by the Kollam District Collector Mr. B. Sreenivas on September 25th, 2006, during a national seminar on "Compassion in Action". This took place at the SN College for Women in Kollam. The club aims to promote an attitude of Kindness to All living creatures among interested children and adults.

Animal Welfare

Our President, Professor CK Tankachy, presented a paper on "Animal Welfare" at a one-day seminar. This was conducted at Panmana Ashramam on April 27th, 2006. About 350 people attended this program.

Alternatives to Dissection

PFA organized and held a Seminar on a topic similar to Alternatives to Dissection, at the KTET Training College, Kalluvathukal, Kollam, on March 24th, 2006. About 200 people attended.

High Court Order

The ABC program has been suspended. In the first week of March, 2006, the High Court in Kerala passed an order to kill all stray dogs. The Municipal Corporation now catches dogs and kills them by lethal injection. Unfortunately, this not only renders our efforts at this program useless, it also promotes a vicious circle of killing and migrating. Dogs which are killed, no longer protect their territory, and so other dogs move in. There is no end in this way.

Animal Birth Control (ABC)

The ABC program is a nation-wide endeavor to reduce the amount of stray dogs in a humane way. ABC was introduced to Kollam district in January 2006. A small house was provided to us in Panmana Ashramam to conduct surgeries and care for the dogs during post-operative convalescence. Spayed female dogs are given seven days of convalescence time, during which we feed them on bread and milk. So far 25 male and 8 female dogs have received sterilization.
